What are the treatment options for Ovarian Cancer in India?
Ovarian Cancer Surgery in India:
The main treatment option for ovarian cancer is usually surgery. Surgery has the highest rate of success in removing the most cancer cells.
During surgery, the surgeon will remove visible cancer as well as adjacent lymph nodes and layers of fat. If the cancer has spread to nearby organs, such as the Fallopian tube and uterus, the surgeon will remove these as well.
Since some patients may wish to become pregnant following surgery your medical professional will discuss the risks with the patient in advance and will only remove all of the reproductive organs with the consent of the patient.
Chemotherapy for Ovarian Cancer Treatment:
Chemotherapy has proven to be an effective treatment for ovarian cancer. Chemotherapy can be used in place of ovarian cancer surgery (if the surgery is caught in its earliest stages) and is sometimes used following surgery to destroy any remaining cancer cells that remain following surgery.
During chemotherapy, strong chemicals are administered to the patient that will kill the cancer cells. These chemicals may be given either in pill form or injected intravenously or directly into the affected area of the body.
Radiation for Ovarian Cancer Treatment:
During radiation therapy, high-intensity x-rays are directed at the area affected by the cancer to destroy the cancer cells. Radiation therapy is generally directed at the entire pelvic region to ensure the destruction of as many cancer cells as possible.
Targeted Therapy for Ovarian Cancer Treatment:
One of the newer treatment options available is targeted therapy treatment. Targeted therapy uses medication that is either injected or taken orally to prevent the spread (metastasis) of cancer to other areas of the body.
Hormone Therapy for Ovarian Cancer Treatment:
During hormone therapy medications are injected that block the hormones that cancer needs to survive.
